Risk assessment for antibiotic resistance in South East Asia
نویسندگان
چکیده
• South East Asia is at high risk of the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance in humans • The risk assessment framework can help countries identify interventions for maximum impact, although isolated interventions will be inadequate • A comprehensive strategy using the One Health approach is needed to contain antibiotic resistance in South East Asia T he indiscriminate use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine and food production and the release of antibiotics into the environment have led to the emergence of antibiotic resistant bacteria and genes. The effectiveness of antibiotics is compromised by the growing resistance, and controlling antibiotic resistance is a priority for the World Health Organization. Knowledge is lacking about the biological determinants of the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. Evaluating these determinants is important to identify effective interventions to contain antibiotic resistance. Weak surveillance systems and a lack of data make it difficult to estimate the extent of antibiotic resistance in the WHO South East Asia region. We carried out a qualitative risk assessment to evaluate the relative effects of the main determinants of antibiotic resistance and to estimate the risk of the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance among humans in the WHO South East Asia region.

• Antibiotic manufacture, as well as its use, contributes to antibiotic residues in the environment, which leads to development of resistant bacteria • In South East Asia, wastewater containing antibiotics is often directly released into the environment without sufficient treatment • Research must focus on developing efficient, affordable, small scale treatment plants to eliminate antibiotic re...
متن کاملOne Health approach to tackle antimicrobial resistance in South East Asia
A ntimicrobial resistance (AMR) has become a core political, social, and economic problem of our time. The efficacy of antimicrobials is declining rapidly, alongside the emergence of pan-resistant bacteria and uncontrolled dissemination of antibiotic resistant genes in non-clinical environments. Projections suggest that by 2050 more people will die of bacterial infections than cancer. The 71st ...

T he continual rise of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) was recognised by the United Nations in 2016 as a serious threat to global health and human development. Surveillance of AMR and monitoring antibiotic usage are complementary and fundamental to everyday clinical practice. They are also central to monitoring the effectiveness of national AMR prevention and containment programmes. The extent o...
